Sedation dentistry maximizes comfort for those who may suffer from dental fear and anxiety. By offering sedation dentistry services, our team can provide care that is minimally invasive and precise to ensure your visit with Seattle’s Best Smiles is a minimally invasive, precise, and enjoyable office visit. We understand not all dental fear and anxieties are the same and differ for each person, which is why we have gone to great lengths to provide multiple customized sedation options for those with minimal to more severe dental anxiety.
Intravenous (IV) dental anesthesia – IV sedation dentistry – involves administering an anesthetic through an intravenous line to reduce your anxiety and induce a state of relaxation. Most of our patients remain conscious throughout the procedure, but some even fall asleep! Dr. Caggiano, our IV anesthesiologist, is gentle and provides his undivided attention to our patients when it comes to administering IV sedation and providing customized treatments to enhance your oral health. With this form of sedation dentistry, you will need someone to drive you home from your appointment, but the effects will wear off in just enough time for you to get back to your daily routine.
The Benefits of Dental Anesthesia
- A deeper level of sedation than other sedation dentistry methods

Beyond IV Sedation Services
Nitrous Oxide
The most famous type of dental anesthesia is called nitrous oxide, or “laughing gas.” This option is inhaled through a mask during your treatment, and while it may not actually make you laugh, you’ll be relaxed and calm. You only need a few minutes to recover from this form of sedation dentistry, so you can get back to your day soon after the mask is removed.
Oral Sedation
With oral sedation, your dentist prescribes you one or more pills to take before your appointment. Depending on the dosage and the specific medication, this could be up to an hour ahead of time. The effects of oral sedation can vary from person to person, but it’s a great way to reduce your dental anxiety. As with IV sedation, you’ll need someone to accompany you to your appointment.
